In early 1990 a group of 11 individuals, former members of another service club, along with 11 newly recruited men and 4 women formed a community service organization determined to affiliate with a Service Association with international reach. After discussions with two other service groups the TRI-VALLEY LIONS were chartered on November 17, 1990 with approximately 130 representatives of Lions clubs throughout the District 14U and MD14 present. Charter Officers were: Ron Dietz, President; John Moyer, Secretary; Richard Maurer, 1st V Pres; Chet Hentz, 2nd V Pres; Don Schwalm, 3rd V Pres; Palmer Geist, Treas; Jim Maurer, Lion Tamer; Eric Huntsinger, Tail Twister; Mike Tobash, Bulletin Editor; Jeff Hentz, Membership Chair; Liz Stutzman, Ass't Sec; Marion Bowman, Jeff Hentz, Terry Fetterolf and Sandy Shade as Directors. PDG Bruce McHenry from the Pine Grove Lions(our sponsoring club) served as an excellent Guiding Lion. The club began meeting at Snyder's Restaurant in Pitman later moving to the Hegins Inn and then to the current location, the Lions Den. The Lions Den was donated by the Tri-Valley Jaycees when they gave up their charter in 2000. The property next door was also donated and the house on that lot was immediately razed by Lions, working for about 3 weekends. With the aid of a State Grant, painting by inmates from a local state prison, the labor of Lions and the newly formed Leo Club, the first floor of the building was renovated and entire building vinyl sided as well as made handicapped accessible. Through the efforts of the spouse of one of the Lions and several artistic Lions, the building was adorned with a mural of the children's story of the Lion and the Mouse in 2003. The building is provided free of cost to community organizations such as the Girls Scouts, Girls Little League Softball and the Hegins Craft Faire Committee as well as to local residents for a nominal contribution. Fund raisers begun during the beginnings of the Club which continue included the annual cider sale(s), operating a food stand at the Hegins Pigeon Shoot which, when discontinued, was replaced by participation at the Hegins Craft Faire and the Hegins Community Day. In 1997 the Lions purchased a concession stand at the Gratz Fairgrounds which has been a fundraiser at the Gratz Fair itself, Fall and Spring Craft Fairs and other events such as Rodeo, and Gratz bicentennial celebrations. The purchase of the concession stand led to efforts to distinguish the menu from other vendor offerings; several members, having experience in making a local favorite(potpie) led the effort to integrate it into the dinner menu and subsequently to extending it to Dinners at the Lions Den in Hegins. We first created our webpage in 2001. Long standing projects include membership in FORCES and support for RECREATION since 1991, Highway Cleanup since 1991, recognition of students with exceptional artistic talent, granting of scholarships to graduating seniors, participation in Lions Peace Poster Contest and recognition of the 4 highest placing students each year, participation in Lions Youth Exchange program hosting eight students from Hungary, Israel, Peru, Finland and Brazil and sending students to Germany and Spain. Approximately 3 Junior students are sponsored yearly to the District 14U Youth Leadership Seminar and several students have been supported for the State Lions Band. The Tri-Valley High School Leo Club was chartered in 2001. Local support has been provided to Tri-Valley Charities, Schuylkill County Crippled Children Society, Hegins and Valley View Fire Companies, Tremont Community Pool, Hegins and Valley View Parks financial support as well as labor in cleaning the park, refurbishing a CCC constructed wall and spring and renovating concession building for Valley View Legion Baseball, Support was provided to the Tri-Valley Football Boosters, the Parent Teachers Organization and Elementary Schools, the Trinity Day Care, Relay for Life and Christmas Light Up the Town. Cooperation with the Tri-Valley FFA program hosting speaking contest participants, the Tri-Valley Band parents in sponsoring cultural events, the Tri-Valley Midget Wrestling Tournament as well as the Lions Little League Softball Team added to the expected projects of providing eyeglasses to needy children and adults, aid to victims of fire and major medical catastrophes. Nationally and Internationally the Lions supported victims of the Southeast Asia Tsunami and collaborated along with 3 clubs in our zone with four Lions clubs in Mississippi in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina to provide Lion service in those areas of Mississippi. Club members have been involved in District and Multiple District activities, serving as Committee members and Chairs, Zone and Region Chairs, District Governors and Council Chair. Current membership stands at 40 including 24 men and 16 women. Thirteen of its members have been designated Melvin Jones Fellows and three have been recognized as Lions of Pennsylvania Fellows.
